Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS)

In Minnesota, it is illegal to transport aquatic plants, water from infested waters, and prohibited species on boats and trailers when on public roads.  The state has established fines up to $1,000 for violating these regulations.

MCWD and Aquatic Invasive Species

The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District is committed to planning for the long term health of water bodies within its boundary. We have identified ecological integrity - and the management of aquatic invasive species - as an important goal in our comprehensive watershed management plan. At this time, the MCWD Board of Managers supports mechanical control (harvesting) as a management practice for invasive plants. However, we are in the process of a scientific analysis of chemical herbicide treatment on Gleason Lake. This six year study will help us test the effectiveness of this management practice before considering it as a viable option for the watershed.

For more information on Aquatic Invasive Species and what is being done within MCWD please see the document below.

MCWD Sponsored Aquatic Invasive Species Training for Law Enforcement Officials

In 2008, MCWD and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources sponsored an training for area police officers and citizens about current regulations and penalties of transporting aquatic invasive species. Participants also learned to identify species to keep a watch for in Lake Minnetonka, and the ecological and financial impacts that invasive species can have on an ecosystem.
