Potential for High Water & Flash Flooding
On Thursday, June 20, 2024, the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasted the potential for up to 4 inches of rain between Thursday and Saturday in the Minnehaha Creek Watershed. About half of this is predicted to fall over a 12-hour period starting early Friday morning, followed by consistent rainfall through Saturday.
Due to the intense forecast this weekend, rain already received this week, and the area’s heavily saturated soils, the NWS predicts a risk of flash flooding for Hennepin County through Saturday. If the watershed receives the forecasted rain, there will be the potential for out of bank flow and flash flooding along Minnehaha Creek. The rain may also lead Lake Minnetonka to rise above the emergency spillway and into the creek.
