Since 2018, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) has worked with communities in the Long Lake Creek Subwatershed to develop a coordinated, long-term plan for regional restoration, to improve the Subwatershed’s water and natural resources.
County Road 6 Pond Retrofit Public Meeting
MCWD is retrofitting its County Road 6 Stormwater Pond in Orono, to enhance the pond’s treatment ability and reduce pollutant loading to downstream, impaired Long Lake. This project was identified in the Long Lake Creek Partnership Roadmap and is the first project advancing from the Roadmap.
Constructed in 1998, the pond captures drainage from 3,370 acres and was designed to reduce pollutants flowing into Long Lake. Recent monitoring data indicate a retrofit would improve the pond’s effectiveness and increase regional stormwater treatment. The project’s design includes the installation of a sand filtration bench, which will filter pollutants from the water before it flows downstream, improving the pond’s treatment ability.
The project is nearing design completion and MCWD is hosting a public meeting on April 3, 2025, to provide information on the project and answer questions from members of the community. Project design will be finalized later this Spring and construction is anticipated to begin in Winter 2025.
