Since 2018, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) has worked with communities in the Long Lake Creek Subwatershed to develop a coordinated, long-term plan for regional restoration, to improve the Subwatershed’s water and natural resources.

County Road 6 Pond Retrofit Project Updates

As part of a broader effort to achieve regional restoration, MCWD is retrofitting its County Road 6 Stormwater Pond in Orono, to enhance the pond’s effectiveness and improve water quality in impaired Long Lake. The Long Lake Creek Partnership Roadmap identified the project as a near-term regional treatment opportunity, and it is the first Roadmap project to be implemented.

Built in 1998, the County Road 6 Stormwater Pond treats water from 3,370 acres, reducing pollutants flowing into Long Lake. MCWD is improving the pond’s treatment ability by installing a sand filtration bench, which filters additional pollutants from the water. Project design began in May 2024, and following a recent public meeting, MCWD’s Board of Managers approved final design in April.
