The county board also heard an annual report from the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District. MCWD Administrator James Wisker traced a decade of progress in wetland restoration across the large expanse of lakes, streams and wetlands. He also reported on planning underway to develop a watershed management plan for the next 10 years.
Some of the highlights Wisker outlined were successes from urban to rural: the Minnehaha Creek greenway through Hopkins and St. Louis Park; improvements to Six-Mile Creek/Halstead Bay, a sub-watershed of Lake Minnetonka; and Lake Wasserman preserve in Victoria. That lake now meets state standards for water quality, he said.
As part of its long-term plans, Wisker reported the MCWD will continue to work with the city of Victoria on Lake Auburn hydrology and smaller offshoot lakes in the county — like ironically named Turbid Lake, to improve water quality and preserve wetlands as Carver County continues its rapid growth.
